So what can we say about Bubba Ho-Tep? Well, it’s quite a challenge to describe this film without giving too much away so let’s start with: it’s very different. Of course it’s different but now you want to know how? Great question, let’s run it against the checklist for a typical Plopcorn candidate:
Low Budget – Check…
Ridiculous Plot – Check
Awful Special Effects – Check
Bits That Make No Sense – Check
Hmmm, this is not helping…
Terrible Dialog – Check, wait No – No Check
Rubbish Characters – No Check
Ahah! Yes this film has all of the classic makings of a shockingly bad film but it’s the characters that make it brilliant and fun to watch; and this is no accident. This film is deliberately rubbish in the areas around plot and so on but that is because it doesn’t take itself seriously at any time. This allows the characters and their dialog to shine through and become the real focus of the film. In some ways the fact that they are fighting a soul sucking redneck mummy is neither here or there, it is a mere backdrop. What you are really interested in, what keeps the film ticking over and keeps you hooked, is the characters. In order to avoid spoilers and let Bubba Ho-Tep have its full impact we won’t go into much detail here. What we can tell you is what makes these characters compelling is as much what the film does not tell you about them, for example: who are they really, are they crazy?
The film has a slow pace to suit the overall mood and so don’t expect a roller coaster ride of action, it’s more sedate in keeping with the general theme. Slow it may be but it delivers some classic moments and is well worth a watch. Though not for everyone, if you like your films a bit weird then this is a must see film. So to Bubba Ho-Tep we say “thank you very much”.
