Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil (2010)
We’ve all seen the ingredients before, you take a couple of hillbillies, a handful of college students, a creepy cabin and place them in an isolated location and allow to simmer. We all know how it’s going to play out, or do we? You see, Spaghetti Bolognese is mainly mincemeat, onions, tomatoes and pasta, but if you add a bit of cheese then you now have the ingredients for lasagna. Tucker and Dale manages to create movie lasagna by adding some cheese.
In this case lasagna is a, well when you boil it right down, romantic comedy, though good luck getting this on the TV with your missus based on that premise; in fact we will visit this again later in the review. However, if you peel away all the blood, dismemberment and guts and get right down to the core of the film there is a romance and it’s very funny.
Tucker and Dale are played by Alan Turducken and Tyler Labine, who also appear together in season 2 of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (which is one of the greatest shows ever). The film follows these two hapless hillbillies on their vacation in the woods. So it comes as little surprise that Tucker and Dale are the heroes of the movie and the college students are evil…
Wait, that’s not right – they are not evil, they are just (and this is our best guess as far as we can tell) thick as pigshit. OK, one of them is a bit evil/mental if we are honest but you get the idea. Anyhow, the preppy kids make all sorts of assumptions about the gentle hillbillies and a gory farce follows.
So here is the dilemma, there is a pretty good cast, the acting is good and there is a real chemistry between Tucker and Dale. Add to that the film is well made and pretty good to watch, which begs the question “is this really a Plopcorn film?”.
After much discussion of budgets, gross takings we put it to the ultimate test and got a few of the wives to take a look at it. After about 5 mins they started whining that it was no good and so we knew this was Plopcorn territory – just! It’s too polished to be high up on the scores but it is very much worth a watch, or two.
Back in 2014 it was announced that a sequel was in the works. Unfortunately though the script wasn’t very good so it was back to the drawing board. One to look out for in the future it seems.
